The painting is from a photo which I also made, walking through an outdoor market deep in Nigeria. I was checking the sights, aware that I myself was the main attraction. A local craft was gourds, some artistically carved, all useful as vessels. Suddenly I encountered a gaggle of people, standing in my path, extending what seemed a genuine offer of hospitality in a gourd half full of warm, home-made “beer.” Instead of taking their offer, I took their picture. Happily they enjoyed that too, though I may have made more friends by accepting their gesture. But at least I have a painting, and a memory of a moment when, had I needed succor of any kind, I believe it would have been offered without restraint.
